Does Washington DC get lots of snow?
Downtown D.C. averages nearly 14 inches of snow each winter but nearly 17 inches if we use all of the data back to 1872. Dulles averages around 21 inches of snow. On average we have a wide range of snowfall amounts in the DMV from 5 inches in Southern Maryland to nearly 40 inches around the Cumberland area.
When was the last time Washington DC had snow?
Our last major snowfall was earlier in the 2018-2019 season, with 8.3″ recorded at Reagan National on January 13, 2019 (plus an additional 1.9″ the day before).

How long has it been since it snowed in Washington DC?
Washington has now gone almost two years without seeing a half an inch of snowfall on any calendar day, the longest streak on record. The 694 days, including Thursday, surpasses the 693-day streak which ended Jan. 7, 1999. Washington is also approaching the longest streak on record without any measurable snow.
Why does DC get so little snow?
At first it is often deep enough for snow, but the warm air associated with the nearing storm erodes the cold air to the east of the mountains. The cold air mass gets shallower and shallower. Soon it is no longer snow, but rain, falling into cold air (below 32° F).
Is snow over for 2021?
Winter will be colder and drier than normal, with the coldest temperatures in mid- to late November, through most of December and January, and in early to mid-February. Snowfall will be near normal in most areas, although a few places south of the Lakes will have much-above-normal snowfall.
